Mumbai: Mercedes Benz India Pvt. Ltd on Monday said its local research and development (R&D) unit had opened a new centre in Bengaluru’s Whitefield area, and expanded capacity at its Pune centre.

The R&D unit Mercedes-Benz Research and Development India (MBRDI) Pvt. Ltd was founded in 1996 as a captive unit to support the parent company’s research, information technology and product development activities.

The new 119,227 sq. ft, 900-seat Bengaluru centre is close to the MBRDI head office in Whitefield. Mercedes Benz said it had also expanded its Hinjewadi facility in Pune which was opened last year, adding 203 seats to take total capacity to 600 seats across 23,318 sq. ft.

“The digital transformation of our company is in full swing and is affecting our entire value chain. Our India centre through its talented workforce provides the necessary gilt edge, raising the digital quotient of the company. MBRDI supports multiple regional hubs of Daimler in keeping the product on computer for as long as possible," said Thomas Merker, vice president, body and safety, at Mercedes-Benz Cars Development in the statement.

MBRDI is one of Daimler’s largest R&D centres outside Germany. With over 3,000 engineers, it focuses on areas ranging from computer-aided design and simulations for powertrain, chassis and exteriors to embedded systems, telematics and developing various IT applications and tools.

The establishment of MBRDI is in line with the Daimler group’s ambition to attract the world’s best engineering talent and form a global footprint for its R&D and IT competencies. MBRDI also aims to partner closely with suppliers in India for its activities in product development and IT services, the company said.
