MUMBAI: In the end it looked all rosy for Mumbai FC. A fifth place finish after a 4-0 win over DSK Shivajians in their final match at the Cooperage on Sunday gave them their all-time best result in the I-League. If not for coach Khalid Jamil's overly defensive mechanisms all through the league, Mumbai FC could have fared much better than where they eventually ended.
They dominated the first half encounter heading into the break with a 3-0 lead.
Eric Brown was all over the place. He created the opening for the first goal, scored two and created the third for Sushil Singh.
Jayesh Rane opened the scoring with a calm finish after Brown found Steven Dias on the left with a pass from the outside of his left foot.
Dias rolled the ball across and Rane did the rest.
Two minutes later Brown finished with a thumping volley for one of the better goals in the I-League. And before the half was over, he had created a beautiful opportunity . He took the defender with a deft body movement and then set up Sushil who scored with a lob.
But as is inexplicable with Jamil's tactics, he invariably pulled the attacking plug and preferred to defend a 3-0 lead when Shivajians looked defeated and dejected.
Shivajians did not exactly crown themselves with glory as they struggled to break open the defence. Brown closed the issue for the team with a crisp placement on a Rane set up.
