The Durrells' Corfu: Visit the naturalist's Greek Island

When Gerald Durrell and his family moved to Corfu in 1935, tourists were a rarity and were generally regarded with bemusement by the local community. Now, the Greek island is one of the most popular holiday destinations in the Mediterranean, and ITV's six part series The Durrells, chronicling the escapades of the acclaimed conservationist and his family, is bound to trigger a new tourism boom.

The series, starring Keeley Hawes and based on Gerald's classic trilogy of Corfu memoirs, including the much-loved My Family and Other Animals, was filmed last summer at various locations around the island, including Danilia, the picture-perfect traditional Corfu village, which is owned by Grecotel Hotels & Resorts.

Now, guests staying at the luxury five-star Grecotel Corfu Imperial can visit the area where the first episodes of The Durrells were filmed and tour the 'White House', where the actual family lived.

The village, which also featured in in the 1981 James Bond film For Your Eyes Only, recreates the architectural structure of old Corfu with its narrow lanes, small stairways, porticos and columns to convey the impression of old Mediterranean houses during the Venetian rule.
