IPTV subscriptions on steady rise in 2016

The number of subscribers to Internet Protocol television in the first three months of 2016 reached 1.29 million as of March showing steady growth, an IPTV suppliers’ association said Monday.

The March figure reflects an increase of 360,000 from December 2015, data by the Korea IPTV Broadcasting Association showed.

The association estimates the number to have surpassed 1.3 million this month, considering there was an average of 120,000 more subscribers each month in that period.

IPTV subscriptions have been quickening since their launch in 2008. In 2010, there were only 3.66 million subscribers, but the number rose to 4.94 million in 2011, 6.54 million in 2012, 8.61 million in 2013 and 10.84 million in 2014.

As of March, KT Corp. had the largest number of subscribers with a 51.4 percent market share, followed by SK Broadband with 28 percent. LG Uplus was third with 20.6 percent.
