Coimbatore: A man murdered his daughter's father-in-law at his residence at Pollachi on Sunday morning, after the latter refused to share the expenses of raising their two grandchildren.
Police officials said that the deceased has been identified as P Mayilsamy, a retired deputy collector of Pollachi. K Selvaraj attacked Mayilsamy who is his daughter's father-in-law.
The two families were close relatives as Mayilsamy's sister was married to Selvaraj.
"A quarrel errupted between the two families on who should take care of the grandchildren. In the heat of the moment, Selvaraj fatally attacked Mayilsamy with a sickle," said a police officer on the case.
P Mayilsamy's son M Chandrasekaran, 47, was married to K Selvaraj's daughter S Sreemathi. While Chandrasekaran worked at a poultry company in Pollachi, Sreemathi was a teacher in Nagpur. Since the couple could not take care of their two daughters, Selvaraj was taking care of them. He not only looked after Arul Karthika, 19 and Bharathi Priya, 11, but also funded their education. Arul Karthika is a B Com final year student in a private college and Bharathi Priya was studying in Class 5.
Recently, Selvaraj and Mayilsamy frequently quarrelled over who would take care of the grandchildren. Selvaraj was miffed that he had to bear all the expenses while Mayilsamy did not contribute anything. He tried persuading Mayilsamy to share the expenses but in vain.
At 6.30am on Sunday, another quarrel erupted between the duo. Selvaraj went to Mayilsamy's residence located on Subbamal Street in Mahalingapuram with a sickle. When Mayilsamy stood his ground, refusing to share expenses for raising their grandchildren, Selvaraj attacked him with the sickle. Mayilsamy succumbed to his injuries on the spot. Selvaraj was arrested and remanded to judicial custody.
