N.D. Parimala Devi, Dean, Government Medical College and Hospital, Pudukottai, explained the causes of breast cancer and cervical cancer and gave tips on self- diagnosis of breast cancer at its early stage of development, speaking at a health awareness programme organised in connection with World Health Day by the NCC Girls’ Wing (4TN Girls BN NCC Tiruchi) of Bharathidasan University. She added that proper lifestyle, intake of balanced diet such as carbohydrates, proteins, vegetables, seasonal fruits, nuts and healthy fats are the key aspects of prevention of obesity. Laxmi of Brahma Kumaris spoke on mental health and Mohan Raj of the Public Welfare Association of Road Accident (Prevention and Rescue), spoke on road safety awareness. NCC cadets, university staff, and a large number of students participated.

College Day

More women are coming in to occupy top positions in spite of gender inequality existing in Indian society, said Justice V. Rama Subramanian, Judge, High Court, Chennai, speaking at the College Day of Cauvery College for Women. Shri. K. Rajagopalan Endowment Prize was awarded to the best outgoing student. Thiripurasundari Award was presented to eight students from various departments for their outstanding performances. R. Murugan, president, college governing council, V. Ramanathan, secretary, R. Gobinathan, treasurer, L. Ramanathan, secretary, Reddy Educational Trust, and V. Sujatha, Principal of the college, were present.

Graduation ceremony

The graduation ceremony of Government Arts College, Tiruchi, was held at its campus recently. R. Thiyagarajan, Principal, presided over the function. The Regional Joint-Director of Collegiate Education K. Kala delivered the graduation day address and conferred degrees on students. She stressed the importance of hard work and advised the students to update themselves to face the competitive world. She also urged the students to develop human values for building a stronger society. Senate Member of the Bharathidasan University P. David Livingstone and others were present.

Sports day

White House bagged the men’s and women’s overall championship at the sports day of T.R.P. Engineering College. N. Vigneshwaran, international chess player, gave away the prizes in the presence of S. Malikraj, Principal, M. Prabakaran and R. Manoharan, Vice-Principals, and R. Rajasekaran, physical education director.

379 get certificates

Students should set a proper goal and work hard towards achieving it, said Ganesh Sankaran, Co-Founder and Chief Operating Officer, Prime Focus Technologies, Bengaluru. Delivering the graduation day address at Sudharsan Engineering College near Pudukottai recently, he called upon students to work towards higher goals with confidence. A. John Alex, a resource-person, spoke on the importance of hard work for achieving success. Ajay K. Sundaram, vice-chairman, K. Ganesan, Principal, were present.

In all, 379 students received their degree certificates. Mr. Ganesh Sankaran also gave away gold medals and other prizes to toppers.

Carnatic music festival

Eminent artistes and students presented musical performance during the fourth edition of the ‘Manoranjani,’ the annual Carnatic music festival of Amruthavarshini, Carnatic Music Club of National Institute of Technology, Tiruchi. The event kick started with a violin concert by TV. Ramanujacharlu, accompanied by B. Harikumar on Mridangam. Solo competitions were conducted for vocal and instruments -- percussion and non-percussion. A lecture demonstration on “Kodhaiyin Kadhal” by Ambujam Vedantham and her disciples mesmerised the audience.

The Thyagaraja Aaradhana, a tribute to Saint Thyagaraja, started with his mellifluous compositions that included his Pancharatna kirtis. Aaradhana, a concert series was performed by students of National Institute of Technology, Tiruchi. The event concluded with a vocal concert by Kalyanapuram S. Aravind, with K.J. Dileep on the violin, Delhi Sairam on mridangam and Nerkunam S. Sankar on Kanjira.
