Andros Townsend believes Newcastle's players have finally discovered an appetite for their relegation battle
Winger Andros Townsend believes Newcastle's players have discovered the appetite for a fight which has been the missing ingredient for so long in their battle to avoid the drop.
The relegation-threatened Magpies came back from 2-0 down at Anfield to draw 2-2 with Liverpool and make it five points in eight days after beating Swansea and getting a draw at home to Manchester City.
Many of the players had seen their stomach for a fight questioned, but Townsend feels they have now finally provided an answer, especially after coming back from the shock of conceding a goal from Daniel Sturridge after just 58 seconds.
"It's been our problem," he said. "Our quality's not been our problem this season, it's maybe been the fight and determination and willingness to run, tackle and head the ball.
"In the past two or three weeks we've shown that in abundance. Hopefully, this can be a turning point and we can get the points we need.
"When you're winning football matches and picking up points against good teams it breeds confidence.
"We made it hard for ourselves and it was a kick in the teeth to concede in the first minute but in the second half we showed great character and great courage to come back.
"Even at half-time we believed if we got an early goal that we could go on and get another one.
"We got the point, and hopefully it can be a massive point.
"I think confidence is a massive thing in football. You see what Leicester have done."
