Chennai cops yet to crack murder of 72-year-old

Several set of fingerprints were lifted from the crime scene while all of them except for two sets belonged to the inmates.

Chennai: Fifty-two days on, city police are yet to crack the murder of a 72-year-old woman reported on March 3, 2016, as they had run out of the leads, and have started their investigations afresh into the incident.

Several set of fingerprints were lifted from the crime scene while all of them except for two sets belonged to the inmates. One of the stranger’s print belonged to the friend of the inmate whose role was ruled out, and the other one was that of a stranger, which was lifted from a wine bottle recovered from the house. Cops had grilled occupants of all 72 flats in the complex but to no avail.

“The flat’s door has a magic eye, and the deceased had the habit of not allowing strangers in. On the day of the offence, the door was latched from outside without a lock. This establishes the fact that whoever murdered her was let in by the murdered. We are confident that the offender must be an acquaintance of the deceased, Sharadha,” said a senior police officer privy to the investigation.

She would not even take the help of maids in disposing garbage. Police said Sharadha was living with her niece Dhanya, (20), at Ram Mansion on Pantheon Road in Egmore. A smart phone and some gold jewelry were stolen. Sharadha, a native of Thrissur, had moved to Chennai with her niece pursuing higher education here in a private college on College Road, Nungambakkam, since the latter’s father was working abroad.
