April 24, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:41 am IST - Bidar:

Ghazal singer Begum Akhtar’s birth anniversary was celebrated in the postgraduate centre of Gulbarga University in Halahalli here on Saturday.

Ramesh Patil Solpur, syndicate member, inaugurated the celebrations by paying tribute to the power of her ghazals that contributed to Hindu-Muslim unity.

He felt that the government and NGOs had to strive to preserve the tradition of singing ghazals and to attract more young people to the art.

Programmes

Abdul Rawab Ustad, Department of Urdu and Persian, said that the Union Culture Ministry had decided to organise several programmes in her memory.

He described the format and content of ghazals, how they were different from classical or folk songs and spoke about how to appreciate the art.

Mukhtedar Taz sang some ghazals and explained their meaning. Shanteshwari NGO president Shivayya Swamy, centre director Ravindranath Gabade, Rajkumar Hebbale and others were present.
