Hassan police have beefed up security around archaeological sites in Belur, Halebidu and Shravanabelagola following an alert from the Internal Security Division of the Ministry of Home Affairs on a threat to archaeological structures and religious places in the country.

R. Vidyullatha, executive officer of Sri Chennakeshava temple in Belur, said the Department of Internal Security had notified him over phone about a bomb threat to archaeological sites and religious places from Pakistan-based groups.

“As Sri Chennakeshava temple is one of the major archaeological structures of the country, the security has to be beefed up,” she said.

R.K. Shahapurwad, the SP, said on Saturday that there was a threat to the 900-year-old Hoysala structure way back in 2014 also.

Back then, temple authorities had received a letter warning of an attack.
