Residents of Mudbul village in Shahpur taluk have been urging authorities to dredge their 42-acre tank on which they are heavily dependent. The parched tank has to be dredged before the rains arrive. With all their requests not yielding any results, they decided to take matters into their own hands.
Using all their resources — tractors, bullock carts and manual labour — they have been dredging the tank on their own. So far, they have finished around 25 per cent of the work.
“Farmers and youths responded to the call and took the responsibility on their shoulders. We are sure of completing the work before the onset of the monsoon,” said Bandeppa Dhore, an elderly resident who is also engaged in dredging. The villagers are sharing the expenses incurred.
Bhaskar Rao Mudbul, a lawyer who hails from the village, said the village residents were setting an example on how to tackle official apathy.
