Lets talk about: How Produnova helped Dipa Karmakar make it to Rio

    Synopsis

Get serious. It’s gymnastics. Some have even called for a ban.

    ET Bureau
YOU MEAN THE RUSSIAN GYMNAST YELENA PRODUNOVA?
Not quite. It is something named after her.

NOT SOME VODKA, I HOPE. Get serious. It’s gymnastics. Some have even called for a ban.

A BAN! OK, AM ALL EARS NOW.
It’s a vault. It’s a front handspring off the vaulting platform followed by two front summersaults and has the highest rating of 7 among all vaults. It’s so dangerous that gymnasts may land on their back or neck and suffer debilitating injury.

    OUCH! WHY ATTEMPT IT THEN?
It boosts the score. Often gymnasts from poorer countries attempt it to get into the big league.

WHY IS IT NAMED AFTER YELENA?
In 1999, she was the first gymnast to land it successfully at a competition.

HMM. THAT WAS 1999. WHAT NOW? Heard about Dipa Karmakar?

YES, THE INDIAN GYMNAST WHO HAS JUST QUALIFIED FOR THE RIO OLYMPICS.
She is the third gymnast ever to land it successfully. She did it at the Commonwealth Games in 2014; and she was just 20 at the time.

WOW, THAT IS SOMETHING. DOES SHE STILL DO IT? Yes, she did it in the qualifying tournaments for the Rio Olympics. She may try it at the Olympics in August.

THEY SHOULD NAME SOMETHING AFTER HER.
Now that’s a thought. Perhaps after she returns with a medal.
