There are many television shows set in New York City, especially when it comes to those streaming on Netflix. The current Big Apple-set series include Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Master of None, Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and parts of Orange Is the New Black, making it easy to imagine characters running into each other on the busy streets of the city that never sleeps.
When The Hollywood Reporter asked the cast of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt to dream up crossovers for Netflix series, the answers were hilarious and very plausible.
“I think Kimmy might be confused at the lifestyle she encounters on Master of None. She’d be jealous of the cafe culture; she’d want them to get jobs,” showrunner Robert Carlock says. “The whole Brooklyn thing, we used to joke, maybe we’ll do it someday. Kimmy learning that, oh Brooklyn, OK, that’s where all the hipsters are. I want to learn how to dress like someone my age. And she ends up going to the wrong part of Brooklyn and gets made over by a bunch of Orthodox Jews and thinks that that’s how cool kids dress now. I think Kimmy dressed as an Orthodox Jewish wife encountering Aziz [Ansari] would be a great romantic arc for both shows.”
Executive producer and recurring guest star Tina Fey also can imagine Kimmy and Ansari’s Master of None character, Dev, running into each other in Brooklyn. “He would be attending something ironically that she was attending something for real, and they probably would both be trying to buy the same pair of tiny pink pants,” she says.
Star Ellie Kemper wants to jump to another coast for her crossover plan: “How about Kimmy going to the world of Love and absolutely not knowing what to do with all of the sex?”
Tituss Burgess has a potential love interest on the brain. “Daredevil!” he exclaims. “Oh my God. I’d be in the fire somewhere, or being beaten up or whatever, and he’d come and swoop me in that little husky voice of his. Or maybe the Punisher is angry at me about something. That man is so beautiful. Oh, lord. I would love to be on that show. It’s the best.”
Carol Kane dreams of a more familial crossover with the inmates of Orange Is the New Black. “I think that it would be really interesting to discover that Lillian is actually Natasha Lyonne’s mother,” she says. “That her daughter is in jail.”
Jane Krakowski agrees, but with one caveat: “Maybe Jacqueline will end up on Orange Is the New Black. But I don’t know if she could survive the wardrobe change.”
Other than Netflix crossovers, Fey also has an idea for a Parks and Recreation crossover that would allow her former Saturday Night Live co-star and frequent hosting partner Amy Poehler to appear on Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.
Says Fey, “She could have been Kimmy’s mom. Leslie Knope could be Kimmy’s old teacher from her hometown, because Kimmy’s from Indiana!”
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt season two is now streaming on Netflix.
