Customs superintendent, 3 inspectors get jail for 6 years

The special judge for CBI cases, Karkardooma, Delhi has convicted Surjit Singh Tagore, then superintendent (Drawback), Customs and Central Excise, New Delhi, Rajinder Singh, B.S Meena and R.S Meena, all then inspectors working in Customs, ICD, New Delhi.

PUNE: The special judge for CBI cases, Karkardooma, Delhi has convicted Surjit Singh Tagore, then superintendent (Drawback), Customs and Central Excise, New Delhi, Rajinder Singh, B.S Meena and R.S Meena, all then inspectors working in Customs, ICD, New Delhi.
Surjit Singh was sentenced to six years simple imprisonment. The three then inspectors were to sentenced to undergo six years rigorous Imprisonment under sections 120 (b) read with 420 and 420/511, 419, 467, 468, 471 of the Indian Penal Code and 13(2) read with 13(1)(d) of Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.
A fine of Rs 10 lakh each was also imposed on all the accused persons.
CBI had registered a case on December 17, 1993 on a complaint received from additional collector (preventive) Customs, New Delhi alleging therein that Surjit Singh Tagore in conspiracy with other officials of the department and private persons, had made fictitious payment towards drawback to some private firms based at Delhi and also made an attempt to make bogus payment to these firms. An alleged loss of Rs 10, 92, 270 lakh (approx) was caused to the government exchequer.
After investigation, a chargesheet was filed in the court of special judge, CBI cases, Karkardooma, Delhi. The trial court found the accused persons guilty and convicted them.
