Hate speech: A win-win situation for Govt. and Akbar Owaisi?

Hyderabad: London visit doesn’t seem to prove auspicious for Chandrayangutta MLA Mr. Akbaruddin Owaisi. State government’s fresh decision has increased the troubles of Akbaruddin Owaisi who is on a vacation tour and rumours are rife among his fans that ‘London visit was unpropitious for Baba’. It must be recalled that government has given a nod to prosecute MIM floor leader Akbaruddin Owaisi in connection with a hate speech delivered in Adilabad’s Nirmal town in 2013.

However legal experts have to say that the GO issued by the government and case hearing will benefit both Telangana government and Akbar Owaisi because the GO issued in this connection mentions a section which is against the constitution hence will weaken the case. Experts say that by issuing the GO Telangana is trying to kill two birds with one stone. On one hand it has tried to gain sympathy from majority community and on the other hand it has tried to give political mileage to its allied party. The hearing will benefit both the government and Akbaruddin Owaisi, besides it will create restlessness in the society.

According to a legal expert cases are booked against several leaders in the country on the charges of hate speeches and promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence and language, yet no action has been taken against them in such cases either due to political tug of war or keeping in view political gain. Another legal expert says people like Varun Gandhi, VHP leader Praveen Togadia are facing similar charges like Akbar Owaisi but action against them is difficult which needs police’s honesty and government’s sincerity.

Since facing charges becomes a reason for publicity for most of the political leaders, they use it as a political stunt to always remain in the headlines, be it under the charges of serious cases.
