Vehicle theft accused flees from police lock-up

Surat: Kiran alias Kalia Subhashchandra Ishi, 19, who was caught for vehicle theft on April 21, escaped from Udhna police station's lock-up here on Friday. Kalia was kept in the night in the lock-up and brought out at 2.30 pm on Friday to be produced before a court. He was neither chained nor handcuffed because he was not a hardened criminal. The policeman on duty asked him to stand in a corner in the police station and went to another room to get record papers.Seeing an opportunity, Kalia fled from the rear side of the police station.
P P Sapra, police inspector, Udhna police station, said, "We have launched a manhunt for the accused. He will be caught soon."
Kalia was a daily wage labourer and lived in Shriram Nagar.
He was caught in connection with a vehicle theft case and booked under IPC section 379.
