‘Soak pits help increase groundwater level’

Deputy Speaker M. Pamda Devender Reddy said building soak pits would increase the groundwater level. She visited Konapur village in Ramayampet mandal along with Collector D. Ronald Rose where mass construction of soak pits began on Friday. The aim is to cover all the houses in a single day.

Out of 475 houses in the village, 87 already have soak pits while works for the remaining houses were started on Friday.

Participating in the programme, Ms. Padma said: “For the first time in the State, construction of soak pits is taken up in an entire village with an aim to increase the groundwater level.” She promised that the government would extend required support to implement the same in other villages as well.

Mr. Ronald said that there was a need to construct soak pits in the district and it would address the groundwater problem in future. Informing that so far 25,000 soak pits were constructed in the district, he said that cent per cent construction was completed at Ibrahimpur and Malkapur. The administration has set a target of constructing four lakh soak pits by the end of this year, he added. RDO M. Nagesh, Superintendent Engineer, Mission Bhagiratha, Vijay Prakash, District Panchayat Officer Suresh and others were also present.
