Pune: A massive fire gutted a truck body building workshop at Ubalenagar in Wagholi during the early hours of Friday.
The fire completely destroyed six trucks, including four brand new trucks. It also destroyed material used to build truck bodies. There were about 20 trucks in the workshop, but timely action by the Pune fire brigade saved them from being destroyed.
S D Jamkhandi, who runs the workshop, told TOI that the fire broke out around 4.30am.
Two workers, who were sleeping inside the workshop, sensed the heat from the fire and woke up. "They ran out of the workshop and alerted us," Jamkhandi said.
The fire brigade was immediately summoned to the shop, but the blaze spread rapidly and engulfed six trucks, he said.
Vijay Bhilare, fire office of the Pune fire brigade, said three fire tenders and two tankers were sent to the spot. "The fire spread rapidly because of the wooden material kept in the workshop. The owner of the plot where the workshop is located sent six water tankers as well," Bhilare said.
He said the team brought the fire under control within 20 minutes, but it took them an hour to douse it completely because of the truck tyres. "No one was injured," Bhilare added.
The cause of the fire is still not known, but Jamkhandi suspected that someone may have deliberately set these vehicles on fire. tnn
