Pune: Assistant inspector Sunil Gawli acted swiftly on a tip-off and arrested four youths for killing a person at Kondhwa Budruk on April 20.
The crime branch investigation revealed that rickshaw driver Deepak Gadhave (22) of Dhayari was bludgeoned to death by five people because of his alleged relationship with the minor sister of one of the suspects.
Police have arrested Vishal Walhekar (22) of Dhayari, Amol Jogdand (20), Vikash Jathar (23), both of Upper Ambikanagar, and Salaim Shaikh (24) of Katraj. The accused were arrested by the anti-dacoity squad of crime branch, led by senior inspector Ganpat Pingle.
The body of an unknown person was found at Kondhwa Budruk On April 20. The man was bludgeoned to death. The suspects had smashed his face with cement blocks to conceal his identity. Police found two SIM cards in the pocket of the deceased. "The SIM did not help ascertain the person's identity," said P R Patil, deputy commissioner of police (crime).
Patil said that during investigation, assistant inspector Gawli received a tip-off that the body found at Kondhwa was of an autorickshaw driver named Deepak Gadhave. He also came to know that the brother of a minor girl, with whom Gadhave had a relationship with, had murdered him.
The crime branch traced the main suspect's house. "We found that the main suspect and his family had left their house and settled down in Uruli Kanchan. The accused again gave cops the slip by escaping to Karnataka in the early hours on Thursday," Patil said.
Gawli and the team rushed to Karnataka and laid a trap outside Indi Road railway station and nabbed the suspects.
Gadhave and the suspects knew each other. In February, Gadhave had abducted the minor sister of one of the suspects. "Angered by this, the suspects hatched a plot to eliminate Gadhave," inspector Pingle said.
