Harkins Theatres is offering one more screening of "Purple Rain," the film that helped make Prince a superstar, on Sunday night, May 1.

The film will once again play at the Cine Capri at Tempe Marketplace. Tickets are still only $5, and proceeds benefit City of Hope.

“Prince was a true artist and an electrifying performer whose music influenced many generations,” Dan Harkins, owner of Harkins Theatres, said in a statement earlier. “Prince’s performance in ‘Purple Rain’ is one of the most memorable music experiences to hit the big screen. He will be deeply missed.”

He will, and the music in “Purple Rain” is transcendent, from the opening sermon in “Let’s Go Crazy” to the guitar and singalong chorus of the title track.

The movie itself? Um, well. It’s aged a little less well, shall we say. Read my review, from when I revisited the film in 2009, for more.

But so what if it isn’t exactly “Citizen Kane?” Musically Prince was doing anything he wanted, on his own terms and no one else’s. When he’s screaming the “Do you want HIM/Or do you want ME?” lyrics toward the end of “The Beautiful Ones,” you wonder how it was ever even a question.

It’s one last chance chance to see the movie — and listen to the music — that vaulted Prince into the stratosphere of popular culture on the big screen for $5. It’s a bargain at any price, but especially that one.
