Hani killer not ready to be part of a democratic society - SACP

Bloemfontein – Chris Hani's killer, Janusz Walus, is not ready to be part of a democratic society and should die in prison, the SA Communist Party in the Free State said on Friday.

SACP provincial spokesperson Mojalefa Simango told News24 that their wish was for Walus to die in prison because he hadn’t shown any remorse.

"His psychiatric report shows that he is still healthy, however, it also says he possesses the same hatred towards communism as before, so this means he might kill again. He is not ready to be part of a democratic society in which a rule of law recognises communism," he said.

"He must die in prison, as long as he doesn’t come clean on why he took a gun and killed Chris Hani. Our hatred is not personal, we just want the truth."

Hani was shot and killed outside his home in Dawn Park, Boksburg, on April 10, 1993.

The communist party and the minister of justice said they would oppose the petition to release Walus.

Judge Nicolene Janse van Nieuwenhuizen dismissed government's bid to appeal the ruling that Walus be released on parole.

Justice Minister Michael Masutha applied for leave to appeal the ruling, just two days after the 23rd anniversary of the SACP leader's assassination.

The Hani family said they would take their fight to the Supreme Court of Appeal in Bloemfontein.
