Rwandan soldiers did not cross into the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) last weekend as reported, the army said.

Military authorities in DR Congo said Tuesday Rwandan soldiers intruded into the eastern part of the country in search of the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) rebels.

But Lieutenant Colonel Rene Ngendahimana, deputy spokesman for the Rwandan army, denied the reports.

"These are false allegations. Rwandan soldiers never crossed the border into DR Congo," Ngendahimana told local FM radio.

Guillaue Ndjike Kaiko, media director for the 34th military region of the DR Congo Armed Forces, told reporters that the Rwandan army was inside the Congolese territory.

Ngendahimana said Congolese authorities, instead of making accusations, should have called a team from the region's Expanded Joint Verification Mechanism (EJVM) to verify such claims but they did not.

The EJVM is a team of military observers set up under a regional framework to monitor security incidents along DR Congo's eastern border.
