“This is an emergency situation for the party, the state and democracy. These kind of challenges don’t come every day. What happened in Arunachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand should just stop here,” said Ambika Soni, the senior Congress leader in charge of Uttarakhand who arrived in Dehradun on Friday.

Soni met Chief Minister Harish Rawat and other MLAs over lunch and will be in Dehradun until Saturday evening after the Uttarakhand High Court gives its verdict on the nine rebel Congress MLAs.

“I am carrying a message from Sonia Gandhi to congratulate the party MLAs and leaders who came together in such a way,” she said. On how the Congress aims to keep its flock together till the floor test on April 29, Soni was quick to retort, “We were not the ones who took people on flights and made them stay in a five-star hotel in Haryana. Our MLAs were all working in their areas and have now come to Dehradun.”

Expressing confidence on proving their majority, Soni said, “April 29 ko doodh ka doodh or paani ka paani ho jayega (Everything will become clear on April 29). I heard Kailash Vijayvargiya (BJP general secretary) on TV saying they don’t consider the court decision as anything and that they were in a majority and will make their government. Now we all know that in a house of 70 and one is nominated and one is their rebel MLA, so how will their 27 MLAs make a majority jab tak khareed farod nahin hogi (unless there is horse trading)?”

On the BJP’s opposition to Rawat chairing cabinet meetings after he was reinstated as CM, Soni asked why the Centre has gone to the Supreme Court if the High Court’s oral order doesn’t stand. “Their legal team is weak. That is what Subramanian Swamy is crying about and for the first time he is speaking the truth,” said Soni.

Festive offer

All prepared to raise the Uttarakhand issue in the upcoming session of Parliament, Soni said, “‘It’s the Opposition’s prime duty to expose a government that has no faith in democracy or the Constitution.”
