Political satire in film songs is a rarity these days. But upcoming Tamil film Joker has one — Ennaga Sir Unga Sattam — that takes a jibe at politicians and the state of the country. With elections due in the state, Tamil lyrics like, Ottu Vaangi Pora Neenga, Oozhaloda Dealaru and Karuthu Solla Mudiyala, Karupu Panamum Thirumbala , the lyrics, by Yugabharathi, and the music, by Sean Roldan, tries to reflect the times we live in.
“We got some strong words in the lyrics,” says Sean Roldan, talking about the inception of the number, “We decided a Cuban-Latin influence would go well for this kind of a song. Also, I’m a big fan of the music of Buena Vista Social Club.”
For Joker , the songs of which recently released, Sean went on a mission — to find untapped talent in the villages of Tamil Nadu. “I did not want to use factory voices, the ones you usually hear in albums,” he says, “We did a sort of ‘audition’ in rural areas and found many singing talents there.” Joker, a social satire film, features many new singers from villages — names like Arandhai Bava, K Perumal, Murugavel and Sundarayyar feature in the album.
As a composer, Sean wants to take up only realistic films. “You cannot take realism for granted,” he says. “When Joker came to me, I told the director (Raju Murugan) that I was waiting for something like this.”
