Return to humanism alone will counter scams: Justice Hegde

Thrissur: Former Supreme Court judge and Lok Ayukta of Karnataka Santhosh Hegde has said the rising scale of scams in the country is a manifestation of the fast decline morality in public life in India, and suggested return to humanism as a long-term remedy.
Starting with the Jeep scam in the 1950s, where the amount involved was Rs 52 lakh, the scale of corruption rose to Rs 64 cr in Bofors in the 90s and in the current decade, it sky-rocketted to Rs 1.76 lakh crores in the 3G scam and Rs 1.26 lakh cr in the coal scam, Justice Hegde said.

All these remind us the growing greed and lack of accountability and transparency of leaders in public life, he said while participating in the 'Shaping Young Minds Programme' (SYMP) organised by the Thrissur Management Association (TMA) in collaboration with the All India Management Association (AIMA).
He emphasised humanism as the key virtue that the new generation should adhere to become better citizens of the country
He exhorted students to inculcate humanism in every aspect of life, without which success in anything is meaningless.
About 1500 students and management professionals attended the programme which was organised to help the youngsters find the common ground between managing self, choosing their career, and striking the right work environment.
D Sivakumar, the chairman and CEO-India Region of PepsiCo India Holdings Private Ltd, Sanjay Grover, AIMA director, and Vijay Thadani, vice-chairman and MD of NIIT Ltd were the resource persons at the programme.
