Labourer falls off 6th floor at construction site, dies

Yet another construction worker dies after falling off an under-construction building in Goregaon area on Tuesday.

According to the officials, the incident occurred at Shakuni Heights building located near Umiya Mata Mandir in Goregaon (East) at around 9.30 am on Tuesday. The deceased was identified as Anwarul Aziz, 28.

“Aziz was present on the sixth floor watering the site, when he accidentally fell down from the sixth floor. He was immediately rushed to hospital but died during treatment,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone XII) M Ramkumar when contacted by Mirror.

Ramkumar said that the police has booked the contractor and the site supervisor for failing to ensure adequate safety measures for the victim. “We have registered a case of causing death due to negligence against both of them under section 304A and 34 of the IPC at the Vanrai Police Station. The police are in the process of identifying and tracing them,” he added.

Another police official said that Aziz was not wearing any safety harness when he fell down. “A large number of such incidents have occurred in the recent past as most builders fail to provide adequate safety gear to the workers while constructing high-rises. In most cases, the construction workers are not given any safety belt or harness, and the contractors don’t install a safety net at the first-floor level for the workers. These measures are mandatory and the responsibility lies with the labour contractors and builders,” he said.

In February, eight workers had fallen from a scaffolding of an under-construction building in Borivali. Most of them, however, had miraculously survived. On Monday, a worker with a furniture store fell from the lift shaft of a 17-storey residential tower nearing completion in Goregaon (West). He was shifting furniture to a flat owner’s apartment and was going down but due to a dimly-lit corridor, he fell down the uncovered shaft. The police arrested the builder, the flat owner and also the victim’s employer after the incident.
