Vetyeka faces must-win fight

If longevity is anything to go by, then vastly experienced Simpiwe "V12" Vetyeka should overwhelm rookie Tsuyoshi Tameda in their clash at Orient Theatre tomorrow night.

The 35-year-old WBA International featherweight champion Vetyeka, who is trained by Boyboy Mpulampula, is a talented pugilist who knows when to switch on his game.

He has boxed 214 rounds from 31 bouts in 13 years.

The former WBA Super and IBO featherweight champion is rated third by the WBA.

Tameda is a 22-year-old Japanese who has 13 wins from 16 bouts.

While Vetyeka will enjoy home advantage, baby-faced Tameda will need nerves of steel against a vociferous East London crowd in a fight that will be the Japanese's first away from home.

Tomorrow night's fight is a must-win for Vetyeka because victory will cement his spot below interim WBA champion Carlos Zombrano, from Peru, and Japan's Satoshi Hasono on the rankings.

Vetyeka is working his way back to challenging for a world title - the WBA strap which is currently held by Argentine Jesus Andres Cuellar.

Vetyeka won his first world title [IBO crown] in 2009 and his biggest victory was against Indonesian icon Chris John with a sixth-round stoppage in Australia in December 2013.

The win heralded his third world title in two weight classes.

He, however, lost under dubious circumstances to Nonito Donaire in China in 2014.

But the South African came back strong to win the international title which he successfully defended against Rodolfo Puente from Columbia in November last year - Vetyeka's 17th stoppage in 28 wins against three losses.

Tomorrow night will form part of the three championship tournament, which is part of the University of Fort Hare's centenary celebrations. The tournament starts at 7pm.
