‘Goa’s set to become the next art hotspot’

Mortimer Chatterjee and Tara Lal, gallerists and curators, Chatterjee & Lal, on art and travel

In just the second half of 2015, work took Mortimer Chatterjee and Tara Lal to Melbourne, Sydney, Barcelona, London and Goa—to attend art fairs, meet collectors or visit artists they represent. And if an art fair is in a city that they’re keen to explore, it plays into their decision to participate. Their favourite fairs? “Art Dubai, as they really look after galleries. With so many cultural overlaps, our artists do very well in the Dubai context. And SPRING 1883, a boutique fair in Melbourne and Sydney. Galleries exhibit in hotel rooms; it gives the display a different feel.” Favourite art spots in India: “We love the early Chalukya temples of Badami, Aihole and Pattadakal. And we think Goa’s set to become the next hotspot. There is a little artist community in Siolim, which is also home to a remarkable artist residency, The Heritage Hotel: Art Spaces.”

This is the seventh in our 9-part series, The High Fliers, of the Business Travel Special. The full feature appears in the April–May 2016 issue of Condé Nast Traveller India.
