'Gau rakshak' attempts suicide in Una town

A 26-year-old man, claiming to be a cow protection activist, attempted suicide by consuming phenyl in the office premises of sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) in Una town of Gir-Somnath district on Wednesday.

Rajkot: A 26-year-old man, claiming to be a cow protection activist, attempted suicide by consuming phenyl in the office premises of sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) in Una town of Gir-Somnath district on Wednesday.
He was demanding that the cow be declared as 'national animal'.
The man, identified as Ashish Vadher, was admitted to a private hospital in Una where his condition is said to stable and out of danger.
Vadher is a resident of Delwada village near Una town.
D B Joshi, investigating officer from Una police station, said that on April 19, Vadher had submitted a memorandum to the SDM demanding that the cow be declared 'national animal' and a strong law be enacted to protect holy cows. "However, on Wednesday, Vadher attempted suicide by consuming phenyl. But his condition is stable," Joshi added.
Vadher is also member of the Akhil Bharatiya Nav Yug Sannstha that works for protection of cows.
Last month, eight people who claimed themselves to be 'Gau Bhakta' (cow protectionists) had attempted suicide in Rajkot demanding that the cow be declared as 'national animal'. One of the members, Gabhru Bharwad, 40, from Gadhadiya village near Jasdan, died during treatment. Bharwad was the national president of Vishwa Gau Raksha Samiti.
