Condemning the lathicharge on protesting garment workers in Bengaluru on Monday, members of the All-India United Trade Union Centre (AIUTUC) staged a protest at the Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel Chowk here on Wednesday.

AIUTUC State vice-president K. Somashekar Yadgiri demanded stern action against police personnel for beating peaceful agitators who were demanding their rights. Criticising the Union government, Mr. Yadgiri said that the Centre had tried to weaken labour laws and favour the corporate sector, and now was targeting the working class with the new EPF norms barring employees from withdrawing their provident fund corpus before retirement.

He urged the Centre to withdraw the new EPF scheme permanently and continue with the existing facilities in the interest of the working sector allowing to withdraw their entire PF amount and need not wait till 58 years of age for final settlement.
