Sena bid to foil Aney’s meet foiled by cops
Akola: Police foiled a bid by Shiv Sena activists to disrupt a meet in favour of separate Vidarbha state, where former advocate general Shreehari Aney was present. As soon as Aney entered the hall, Sena activists tried to gatecrash the meet. However, cops lathicharged them and drove them away. Later, police arrested some Sena workers. Sena MLA Gopikisan Bajoria too rushed to the spot and argued with the cops.
The meet was going on peacefully until Aney reached the Pramilatai Oak Hall and sat on the dais. The Sena workers present near the venue gathered near the entrance and started raising slogans against separate Vidarbha state. The cops present at the venue were taken aback by the sudden protest, but reacted swiftly to disperse the protesters with a lathicharge. Sena’s district vice president Rajesh Mishra, Akola city chief Tarun Bagere, former corporator Gajanan Chavan and several others got hit by lathis. The cops took some protesters to Kotwali police station. They included Mukesh Murumkar, Sharad Turkar, Devidas Bodade and others.
Later, Bajoria, Mishra, district president Shrirang Pinjarkar and other Sena leaders told the media that they were protesting in a democratic manner. They alleged that the police were in favour of separate Vidarbha and hence they had been lathicharged. Bajoria also said that Vidarbha state would not be created, no matter how many such conventions were held.
