Adam Habib, the South African professor of political science and the current Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, expressed his keen interest in exploring collaborations with Sabarmati Ashram and education institutes in Ahmedabad, including NID, IIM-A and CEPT.
“The possibilities on collaborations can be in three areas of joint research, joint appointments and student exchange programmes. We are keen to collaborate with premier institutes, like NID, CEPT and IIM,” said Adam Habib, who is on a week-long visit to Gujarat, along with his wife Fatima.
On the collaboration with Sabarmati Ashram, Habib said, “It would be interesting to see how the two institutes associated with two stalwarts of peace — Wits University, the alma mater of Nobel peace recipient Nelson Mandela, and Mahatma Gandhi’s Sabarmati Ashram can be brought together.”

“Since this is the first visit to Ahmedabad, I am sure much will materialise in the coming visits,” he added.
Adam’s great grandfather, Dada Abdulla, had taken Mahatma Gandhi to South Africa to fight a family dispute case. The ashram director Tridip Suhrud gifted them a copy of an old letter written by Dada Abdulla to Gandhi’s brother, offering him to legally represent the case and send Gandhi to South Africa. The team took a round of the Ashram and they were also shown rare manuscripts of Gandhi, including the saree he had woven for his wife Kasturba.
