Viola Davis will be honored with the female 2016 Maui Film Festival Navigator Award, Barry Rivers, founder and director of the event, announced Wednesday.
“Viola Davis not only has the talent to deliver when the opportunity knocks, but also has the determination, drive and work ethic to steer her way through any project with empathy, compassion and grace,” said Rivers. “Viola is a true original and we couldn’t be more pleased to honor her.”
Rivers announced previously that Bryan Cranston is set to receive the male 2016 Maui Film Festival Navigator Award. The 17th annual event will be held June 15-19 at the Wailea Resort in Maui.
Davis currently stars as Annalise Keating on ABC’s “How to Get Away With Murder.”
She is a multiple award winning and nominated actress, receiving an Oscar nomination for best actress for her portrayal of Aibileen Clark in “The Help,” a Screen Actors Guild Award for performance by an actress in a drama series and a Primetime Emmy Award for lead actress in a drama series.
Davis recently began production on “Fences,” adapted from August Wilson’s classic play, alongside Denzel Washington, who will be producing, directing and starring in the film.
