Review consultants to finalise alignment of Worli-Tambe Chowk phase

Following this submission, the NGT disposed of an appeal last month filed by the Peddar Road Residents Association in 2014.

In what could come as a major relief to Peddar Road residents fighting against the proposed flyover on the “forever congested” arterial road, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has stated before the National Green Tribunal (NGT) in Delhi that it has appointed review consultants to finalise the best suitable alignment of the Worli-Tambe Chowk phase of the proposed Coastal road. This means the Peddar Road flyover project, two decades in the planning, is unlikely to be built as the civic body has stated that the coastal road project is expected to decongest traffic movement on Peddar Road.

In its affidavit filed before the NGT, the BMC has stated it was decided that it could opt to fast-track the Worli-Tambe Chowk phase of the project with to enable the movement of South Mumbai traffic to Haji Ali junction without using Peddar Road.

Following this submission, the NGT disposed of an appeal last month filed by the Peddar Road Residents Association in 2014.

“The BMC has appointed a peer review consultant for finalising the best suitable alignment among the various alternatives of Coastal road in order to implement the coastal road project,” reads the order from NGT. The order, referring to the BMC affidavits, adds that the peer review consultant will submit their report by June 6, 2016, after which the BMC will be in a position to decide whether to go ahead with immediately taking up the Worli-Tambe Chowk section of the proposed Coastal road or to instead revert to a previously proposed idea, that of building two small bridges instead of one long Peddar Road flyover. This plan, devised last year in response to the continuing protests against the Pedder Road flyover project, aimed to build small flyovers at Haji-Ali Cadbury House junction and Gamadia Road junction.

Civic officials said that the people travelling from Marine Drive to Haji Ali may not need to take Peddar Road once the Coastal road project is completed. “It will help to decongest the traffic movement on Peddar Road and it will be done without disturbing the traffic flow,” said a senior civic official.
