Skilled India will be the key to success of Make in India, according to Jochen Stallkamp, Managing Director, BMW India Chennai Plant.

Emphasising the need to scale up training and development of a skilled human resource pool, Stallkamp said the concept of Make in India, a move to develop the country as a manufacturing hub, can be successful with the right set of people. “It will not be possible to harness the business potential without this,” he said. Addressing the convocation of the Indo-German Training Centre, he said the BMW group which is celebrating its centenary employs over 120,000 people globally. It constantly develops and upgrades employee skills. Achim Fabig, Consul General of Germany in Chennai, said Germany is keen on partnering with India in a number of fields including renewable energy and urban development. Companies from Germany are exploring opportunities in the smart cities programme.

Raju Venkatraman, MD and CEO, Medall Healthcare Pvt Ltd, said start-ups offer a huge opportunity but the risk is high. However, students need to get out of their comfort zone and explore this emerging field. It is relatively easy for ideas to get funding but business ideas need to generate sustained revenues.
