Some popular supplements include multivitamins, calcium, and fish oil. Multivitamins: Many people use multivitamins to fill nutritional gaps in their diets. Experts suggest taking only one a day, or simply taking a multivitamin on days when the nutritional health of your food is lacking.
- 3. Nutritional Supplements Some individual vitamins that may be necessary are vitamin A for healthy eyes, teeth, and skin, B vitamins for immune function, and vitamin C for antioxidant absorption. Calcium: Calcium is important for a wide array of functions including nerve and muscle functioning, intracellular signaling, hormone secretion, and bone structure. The best food sources of calcium include dairy products, dark leafy greens, and fish. As with multivitamins, calcium supplements can be taken when a diet does not offer enough calcium. Fish Oil: Fish oil is the term that generally describes two different kinds of omega 3 fatty acids. Many people believe fish oil supplements will lower cholesterol and reduce the chance of heart disease. Experts suggest taking fish oil supplements if your diet is high in proteins from sources such as red meat and eggs, but not fish. The former group of proteins offers omega 6, while fish gives the body omega 3. Ideally, the ration of omega 6 to omega 3 should be 1:1.
