Seventeen years after his infamous meltdown at Carnoustie, Jean van de Velde will return to the Scottish course when he makes his Senior Tour debut in July.

Van de Velde, who contrived to blow a three-shot lead on the final hole of the 1999 Open Championship, reaches the qualifying age of 50 next month, allowing him to make his first appearance on tour at the Senior Open on July 21.

The Frenchman has returned to Carnoustie on several occasions since 1999 and is looking forward to taking on the links once again.

"I came to peace with it a long time ago," Van de Velde was quoted as saying by the BBC. "It never wakes me up in a cold sweat."

Van de Velde's travails on Carnoustie's 18th in 1999, where he followed his ball into Barry Burn before carding a triple-bogey seven, opened the door for Paul Lawrie, who lifted the Claret Jug after a playoff.

The Frenchman will compete against a host of former stars, including Tom Watson, Bernhard Langer and Colin Montgomerie, for a first prize in excess of £213,000 ($306,500).
