Orange Line crane claims teen’s life

LAHORE - A young boy yesterday died when he was hit by a crane on the site of metro-train project in Mansoora on Multan Road.
Police identified the boy as Juma Gull, a resident of Mansoora. An eyewitness told the rescue workers that the boy was trying to cross the road when heavy-crane hit him. The boy sustained multiple injuries and fell down in a nearby drain.
The victim was pulled out dead by rescue workers after an hour-long struggle. The police handed over the body to the family. Further investigation was underway.
Meanwhile, a man died and two others injured when a truck smashed into an auto-rickshaw near Chuhng bust-stop on the Multan Road. The injured were shifted to the Jinnah Hospital by Edhi ambulance service.
The police seized the truck and are investigating.
Punjab to pay for 800 mortar shells: The Punjab government will pay over Rs20 million to the Pakistan Rangers (Punjab) for firing at least 800 mortar shells during the ongoing security operation in the river island in the Rajanpur district.
An official familiar with the development yesterday told The Nation that, “one mortar shell costs at least Rs 36,000” and more than 800 shells were fired by the paramilitary forces so far.
The police and the paramilitary troops had launched the largest security operation against gangsters in the Kacha area three weeks ago. Six policemen were killed and seven wounded as the police forces launched ground assault in the tough terrain. The gangsters are holding at least 24 policemen hostage for the last couple of days.
An official said that the provincial government had been directed by the competent authority to pay the “bill” sent by the Punjab Rangers to the provincial home department.
The operation is underway in the area.
3 arrested with fake visas: Authorities yesterday arrested three persons from the Lahore’s Allama Iqbal international airport with fake visas.
An official said that three men were arrested by airport security force as they tried to fly to Italy on fake visas. They were sent to unknown place for further interrogation. A criminal case would be filed against the suspects.
