Drought-like situation drives farmer to suicide

Rajkot: A 60-year-old farmer, facing severe financial crunch owing to low rainfall in last two years, committed suicide at his farm in Jamjodhpur taluka of Jamnagar district on Monday.
The deceased, identified as Kalyansinh Jethwa, committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree in his 12 bigha farm. He is survived by wife, a son and a daughter.
On Monday, Jethwa went to his farm in the morning and hanged himself on a tree there.
When he did not return home, his younger brother went looking for him and found him hanging from the tree and informed the police.
Police said Jethwa's 12 bigha land on Jingersar Road in Jamjodhpur was not in much use since the past two years.
According to K D Waghela, assistant sub-inspector of Jamjodhpur police station, Jethwa was upset as he was not able to cultivate enough at his farm due to poor monsoon and lack of irrigation facility in the village. He added that the statement of his family members suggested that Jethwa was severely depressed as he was under financial stress and finding it difficult to make ends meet.
This is the second farmer suicide in April. Earlier this month, a 45-year-old farmer Dhirubhai Vasani from Amarapur village in Vinchiya taluka of Rajkot hanged himself to death owing to severe water crisis and unavailability of work to earn a livelihood.
