If weekends provide solace for many to take a break from their prosaic life, here is an army of residents who don’t wish to look forward to it.

Traffic bottlenecks and shortage of space coupled with mounting parking woes are some of the main issues faced by those living in Resapuvanipalem that stretches from Swarna Bharati Indoor Stadium to CMR Central shopping mall.

The street adjacent to the shopping mall gets choked in the evenings and during weekends as most shoppers convert the colony lanes into a convenient zone to park their two-wheelers to skip parking fee at the mall. Though there are dedicated security guards keeping a check on traffic violations, the colony people say they are tired of combating this pressing issue.

One of the oldest colonies or rather a village existing in the port city, Resapuvanipalem was once a place where a variety of mighty millets used to grow. “After my grandparents and parents, we have been living here since 1943. Decades ago, the neighbourhood was quite cool, breezy and hardly occupied. Even when a mansion was let out for Rs.450 per month, people were still reluctant to stay as there was no infrastructure back then,” narrates Gudla Parvathamma, a 72-year-old resident in the neighbourhood.

After much thought, underground drainage pipes have been laid in the area. “However the connection for the same is yet to be given. When we approached GVMC to request them to speed up the process, they brushed aside the proposal stating that the filtration plant for the UGD system is yet to be readied,” says Ganesh Reddy, a businessman in the colony.

Pointing out an ‘unwarranted move’ of relocating Bhooloka Mata temple, village deity, Gadey Divakar, an interior designer residing in the colony said: “Since the main lane is getting converted into the BRTS road, village heads intend to shift the temple inside the colony. If this proposal takes off, there won’t be any space left on the road. The temple should be relocated to a dedicated place instead of a colony lane.” Most residents feel there are much bigger issues to focus on such as developing good roads, removing the wine shop in the colony, improving waste management and getting the UGD connection ready.
