Borussia Monchengladbach hoping to extend Andreas Christensen's stay

Borussia Monchengladbach want to sign Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen on a permanent contract once his loan ends in 2017, sporting director Max Eberl has reiterated.

Christensen, 20, is currently on loan at the Bundesliga club from Chelsea until 2017, after joining on a two-year deal last summer, and the Blues have no option to recall the youngster.

Speaking at the annual members' meeting on Monday, Eberl said that they want to tie the Denmark international to the club beyond the end of his loan spell.

"You can be sure that we will do everything we can to sign him on a long-term contract," Eberl told the club members.

Christensen has not missed a minute of action since the arrival of coach Andre Schubert in September 2015, and has featured in 35 competitive matches this season. He has struck three goals, and created one more.

The Foals are currently one of several teams competing for the Champions League playoff place. Following a run of away defeats, they trail fourth-placed Hertha Berlin by four points, and have a six-point lead on Wolfsburg, the first team outside the Europa League positions if Werder Bremen do not win the DFB Pokal.

Despite several promising performances, Gladbach finished bottom of their Champions League group with Manchester City, Juventus and Sevilla.

However, their first participation in the group stages of Europe's biggest club competition has seen their turnover rise by €38 million to a record of €160.6m in the business year 2015. They also posted a record profit of €21m.
