Gov’t reveals immediate measures to improve road safety – AES, Kejara, LPT 2 review, IRAP execution

In light of the nation’s ever-increasing number of road accidents and fatalities, the government has announced that it will be implementing four urgent initiatives to help improve the situation. According to The Star, transport minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said that these measures were discussed recently at the Cabinet Task Force on Road Safety meet, with all in favour of the move.

“Several key areas were covered with a view towards execution in the near term,” he said. “They are the implementation of AES and the Kejara Demerit Points system (AWAS), the standardisation of the maximum permitted weight of commercial vehicles, evaluation of road safety and accident investigation of the East Coast Expressway 2 and recommendations on improvement and the execution of the International Road Safety Assessment Programme (IRAP) in Malaysia.”

The minister added that the task force was made aware of all current road safety initiatives and were presented with safety statistics during festive seasons last year. Notably, it was reported that a total of 489,606 road accidents and 6,706 fatalities were recorded throughout 2015.

“This was clearly an increase from 2014 and the economic loss incurred was in excess of RM8 billion,” Liow said. He added that the task force would review the advocacy plan by the Road Safety Department and the implementation of Malaysia’s Road Safety Plan 2014 – 2020.

Liow said that he remains hopeful that the alarming statistics will be reduced with the government’s new initiatives, but said that none of this can be realised if drivers aren’t responsible and courteous on the road. “A dedicated Cabinet Task Force on Road Safety cannot achieve its goals if the rakyat and non-governmental organisations do not play their role in this matter,” he concluded.

No, it’s not to collect more money.

Look at the picture in the article and you will see how many drivers use the emergency lane to cut through traffic.

These new measures are necessary because Malaysians are terrible, selfish drivers. They will only understand once it hits their purse and cashflow.

Of course, all those measure have to be carefully implemented and free of corruption.

I support much stricter road rules because there is simply no other way for Malaysian drivers to understand that their driving habits are absolutely dangerous, ridiculous and pathetic.

How about solving the blatant corruption that’s going on at JPJ first. 1 swoop by MACC, can easily catch 90% corrupt JPJ staff.

High car price is one of the reason behind the lacking of safety features. This forced car manufacturer to strip here & there just to make car seems affordable but put Malaysian at risk.

The Minister should also look into the training and testing of new drivers. No safety system will save any lives if new drivers are poorly trained. Then any road bullies and racing drivers should go for retraining before letting them back on the road.

  • Malaysia goverment should introduce mandatory law to require every car manufacturer to spec their car with ABS brake & if possible with transaction control as now these 2 safety module(ABS & Transaction control) no longer expensive to produce in mass. that at least will make quite a improvement in safety

    • Wow.. what is the so-called transaction control? Need bank negara intervention or not?

      • Tak guna pandai BI, kalau kepandaian tu digunakn utk menghina kelemahan org lain. Aku yg bengap ni pun boleh faham apa yg En Alex maksudkan… traction control. Kalau dia salah kat situ, masalah besar ke? Sekurang2 nya dia ada idea untuk disumbangkan. Lu? Apa pun x bley.

Just have more enforcement manning the roads. Motorist don’t give a damn about road safety so the only way is to have cameras to monitor and summon those offenders. Make sure it applies to everyone be it motorbike or VIP’s.
Trust me the numbers will drop.
ABS & traction control won’t help if the drivers have zero ethical and driving on the emergency lane.
Datuk Seri please make sure the AES is operational & workable cos for all the hot air we still don’t see progress.
If safety is top priority ,please fast track it.

  • Can’t even enforce seatbelts and car seats, now want to talk about AEB?

  • Let’s see if it is just talk. Always new campaign, new rules, new this and new that, same or even worse results. Instead of looking outwards, has the ministry and other govt agencies ever considered to rectify themselves first? Your change in attitude and aptitude will ensure that enforcement is done properly, and corruption within agencies is eradicated. Typical government agencies, always the short term approach
