Pedder Rd woman’s body found off Girgaum Chowpatty
Police suspect senior citizen committed suicide as she asked son to meet her before leaving home and didn’t take caretaker along.

The body of a senior citizen was found floating in the sea near the Girgaum Chowpatty shore on Friday evening. A hawker who spotted it alerted the Malabar Hill police.

She was later identified as 63-yearold Hansa Chandrakant Gaglani, a resident of Shyam Nivas, Pedder Road, and had been missing from her home since Wednesday. Her husband is a businessman and her son a diamond broker.

The police, who have registered a case of accidental death, said that while her family members suspected no foul play, they also said that Hansa was behaving normally on the day she went missing and gave no indication that anything was bothering her that would push her to take her own life.

A day before she went missing, Hansa had called her son Giriraj -- who had gone to his in-laws’ place in Cuffe Parade -- to come home as his father was not well.

According to the statements given by her family, Hansa left home on Wednesday afternoon after telling her husband Chandrakant that she was going to the Babulnath Temple.

However, she did not take her caretaker Rajshree Bhosale along like she usually did. That was the last time her husband saw her. When she did not return till evening, her husband called their son, who had gone for a movie with his wife.

On Thursday, they registered a missing complaint at Gamdevi police station. A day later, they got a call from the police about a body being found whose appearance matched with their description of Hansa.

The body was identified by Giriraj. According to the police, Hansa had been suffering from high blood sugar and high blood pressure. She had recently undergone a cataract procedure on both eyes and was frustrated due to her ill health. The family was also going through a financial crisis.

Giriraj said, “Our family is in a state of shock right now and we are still in mourning. I do not wish to speak about it at the moment.”

The police suspect that Hansa never went to the Babulnath Temple and are probing whether she had met someone before her death. Additional CP (South Region) Pratap Dighaokar said, “A case of accidental death has been registered and the matter is being investigated.”
