Mumbai Kinara fire: Victims’ families stage protest at Azad Maidan, seek CBI probe

PARENTS, relatives and friends of the seven students who lost their lives in the Kurla-based Hotel City Kinara blaze in October 2015 staged a protest at Azad Maidan on Monday, demanding a CBI inquiry.

The seven were students from Don Bosco Institute of Technology. Two —Bernadetta D’Souza and Erwin D’Souza — were media students from the same campus and five – Sharjeel Shaikh, Akash Thappar, Taha Shaikh, Sajid Choudhary, and Brian Fernandes – were attached with the college’s technology institute.

A customer, Arvind Kanojia, who was a Virar-based engineer with a consultancy firm, was also killed.

“It has been six months of police investigations now and we still don’t know what led to the fire at the restaurant and engulfed our children,” said Mushtaq Sheikh, father of 19-year-old Taha. The parents of the deceased donated cheque of Rs 100 each to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund, stating that no compensation has been provided to the victims’ families.

Rekha Thapar, Akash’s mother, who was also present at the protest, said that CBI should now take charge to solve the mystery of what exactly sparked the fire.
