Kolkata: With barely a week to go for the assembly polls in North 24-Parganas, a CPM party office in the Sodepur-Panihati area was ransacked by alleged Trinamool Congress supporters on Saturday.
The incident comes barely five days after two CPM party offices were vandalized by bike-borne miscreants at ward Nos. 18 and 19 in Panihati municipal areas at Sodepur's Panshila and Panchanantala Bazar.
On Saturday night, the CPM party office in Sodepur's Shantinagar (ward No.
15) was ransacked. On Sunday morning, as the news spread in the locality, local CPM activists gathered at the spot and launched an agitation alleging police inaction in nabbing the culprits.
"Trinamool-backed goons ransacked our party office, which falls in the Khardah assembly area. All the furniture and other office equipment were smashed, party flags and festoons were dumped outside and set on fire," said local CPM leader Subhas Sengupta, adding that a complaint was lodged with Khardah police station but cops are yet to act.
CPM supporters alleged that with the polls just round the corner, Trinamool men have unleashed a reign of terror in the locality. "On Tuesday, two of our party offices were demolished and at least four CPM supporters were injured after being hit by bricks hurled by the Trinamool men. Despite our repeated appeals, police are yet to take any action in this connection," a local CPM supporter said.
CPM supporters took out a procession in the Sodepur-Panshila area to protest against the repeated attacks. "We have received a complaint and the matter is being investigated," said a senior police official of the Barrackpore Commissionerate.
Trinamool leaders, however, refuted the allegation levelled against the ruling party. "None of our party supporters were involved in the ransacking. Both CPM and Congress men are desperately trying to malign our party's image on several issues," said Trinamool's district (North 24-Parganas) observer, Panihati MLA and candidate Nirmal Ghosh.
