Friends knew her as good student: Classmates

Nivetha's death could be relationship issues.

Chennai: Nobody around her house knew what could have driven Nivetha, just 17 years old, to commit suicide. According to a close friend and a classmate, Nivetha was depressed about being asked to not stay in touch with one of her male friends.

When DC reached her house at Sri Sayee Nagar on Sunday, there was nobody at her realtor father Hari Kumar’s residence. Hearing about his daughter’s demise, all their relatives had come down to Chennai from all over Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Her body had been taken to her relatives’ place in Tambaram.

“She was studying in twelfth grade and had given her Board exams. She was a nice well-behaved girl,” said Madaswamy, a laundryman near her house.

“Her mother was against performing her last rites in this house where she was born and she grew up and insisted that her body be taken to their relatives’ place before cremation,” he added.

One of her classmates, who did not wish to be named, said that the news has left her sad. She also said that she was a good student but had been sad for the past few days.

On Saturday evening, Nivetha, instead of going to her Maths tuition, jumped from the fourth floor of a shopping mall in Vadapalani. Police sources said that relationship issues could have driven the girl to take this extreme step.
