Mohali: For Gurkeerat Mann, the sounds of his childhood included the clap of the cricket ball on the bat and the roar of fans. Players, the pitch, the scoreboard - Gurkeerat, whose house is right next to PCA Stadium in Mohali, soaked it all up.
"As an eight-year-old, I used to see players entering PCA stadium in Mohali and watch them practice. This is how cricket became my passion.
I enrolled myself at the age of nine," said Mann, who made his T20 debut for Punjab in 2012. He went on to score 236 runs in the first five matches, and got much better in List A competitions, scoring 1,193 runs in 35 matches in four seasons.
Mann, who played for the Indian cricket team against Australia this year, played in under 15, 19 and 22 for Punjab. His performance caught the attention of Kings XI Punjab selectors in 2012, which catapulted him into the limelight.
In the first game, Mann scored 29 uns off 12 balls. He also put up a good show for India A against Australia A in 2015. The 25-year-old was selected for the Indian squad in January and played his first international match at Melbourne cricket ground on January 17. His amazing catch during IPL 2013, when he jumped and made Ross Taylor walk back to the pavilion, came to be known as the Super Mann catch.
Over the years, Mann has been a prominent face in Punjab cricket. In the 2013-14 and 2014-15 Ranji seasons, he scored 449 and 677 runs respectively, securing a place in the Indian squad.
"The match that kickstarted my career was a domestic match played in 2012 where I scored 190 runs in the long format. For now, I am playing for the Kings and trying to do my best to make my place in the Indian cricket team," said Mann.
