The restive northeast Nigeria's Yobe State has reopened the 132 kilometer Damaturu-Biu federal road, which was blocked three years ago by Boko Haram insurgents.

Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, Chief of Army Staff, said on Saturday at the occasion that the road was strategic to the economic well being of Yobe as it linked the state capital with many communities.

He said reopening of the road would boost economic activities of Yobe, Borno, Adamawa and Gombe State, noting that this will also impact positively on the current military operations in the area by pushing forward the achievement of the troops.

Buratai called on the state government to accelerate the reconstruction of the road and encourage economic activities.

Earlier, the state governor, Ibrahim Geidam, commended the army and other security agencies for restoring peace in the state and assured that the state government would reconstruct the road.

The Boko Haram insurgency has virtually crippled most businesses in the northeastern states of Borno, Adamawa and Yobe. Endit
