According to the great epic Ramayana, Sita went inside the earth. It is believed that Sita was the daughter of goddess earth. After Lav and Kush reunited with their father Lord Rama, Sita prayed to mother earth to take her back. Soon after, the earth split open and Sita disappeared into it.

The place where Sita vanished into earth is located in modern day Uttar Pradesh and is called Sita Samahit Sthal or Sitamarhi. This holy place is situated between Allahabad and Varanasi. It is a well-known Hindu pilgrimage spot, and a tourist spot that attracts many tourists throughout the year.  

Why did Sita wish to disappear into the earth?

Locals believe that the temple here is the place where Sita went into the earth as per her wish. Some legends say she took that step after she was asked to give another Agni Pariksha for having lived in the ashram of Valmiki Rishi, located in the forests of Sitamarhi.
