Will Salgaocar bust Bengaluru FC party?
BENGALURU: The Sree Kanteerava Stadium here is decked and ready for a raucous celebration on Sunday evening and Salgaocar FC can be forgiven for feeling like uninvited guests. Thousands of Bengaluru FC fans are expected to converge at their `Fortress' to celebrate a win that would give the Blues their second I-League title in three years.
But Santosh Kashyap's relegation survivors have other ideas.
"We are pressure-free now, Bengaluru is under pressure and we will see how we can put more pressure and crack them tomorrow," he said smugly on the eve of their all important I-League encounter. Fifth-placed Salgaocar are no easy pushovers -they eked out a fighting 1-0 win away in tough conditions at Aizawl, are unbeaten in five games and gunning for the fourth spot. But the absence of a handful of their key players will hurt their chances. Their biggest miss would be Scottish striker Darryl Duffy , who has accounted for 11of Salgaocar's 19 goals, and is serving a one-match suspension for picking up his fourth yellow card of the season.
"He (Duffy) is an important player for us, but we beat East Ben gal without him (he played for 10 minutes). We are also missing Calvin Mbarga, Gurjinder Kumar, Clifton Dias and Gabriel Fernandes due to injuries. Aslon Oliveira is sick so he's out as well, but we have Manandeep Singh back," Kashyap said.
Ashley Westwood's boys enjoy a 6-0 head-to-head win record against Salgaocar, but the visitors remain high on confidence. When reminded that Bengaluru need just two points to seal the title, Kashyap shot back, "Hope you remember what happened last season. Five minutes made the difference. Two is a big target for BFC to achieve."The hosts need no reminder. An 86th-minute header from Mohun Bagan's Bello Rasaq at the Kanteerava ended Bengaluru's dreams of a historic back-toback I-League double and the memories of that heartbreaking loss are still fresh among the Blues.
Westwood, as always, presented a calm approach to Sunday's crucial match. "Just another game of football," he quipped. "The league's now in our own hands. We're well-equipped to put on a good performance and win the league in front of our home fans... we are not counting our chickens, we are not thinking we've won it."
